Coach and personal trainer
We catch up with top triathlon coach James Beckinsale, and hear of his love of hills and his racing highs and lows…
Why did you start running (and subsequently triathlon)? And when?
As a young boxer – when I was 12 or 13 - we did something called "road work" so I guess that’s where it started. I then ran lots in the army (with weight/boots etc). On leaving the army I ran the London marathon & then started triathlon around 1995-96.
Assuming you love running, why?
It clears the head and I love the hurt on hard sessions especially hills!!!
Who has been the greatest influence on your life as a coach/runner/triathlete?
The soft coaching skills of my civvy boxing coach (Fred) at Croydon ABC, lots of individuals either academics, coaches or athletes in the past 25 years.
What is your favourite run ever?
The coastal path in Tenby
How fast can you run a mile?
What has been your greatest race? And your worst?
My greatest was going sub 10 hours at Ironman Austria and sprinting the final 5k. The worst was the very same Ironman a few years later when I got 3 punctures. The very same year I had a tire blow at Ironman Wales… chasing Kona!
What is your life ambition as a coach?
To be old, have white hair and still be working with athletes with a smile on my face & in my heart.
What are you most proud of?
The place I am today.
