It’s far better to wear a number of layers rather than one heavy weight garment because layers help maintain and regulate body temperature and enable you to peel off as you warm up. But your layers need to be breathable. Resist the temptation to overdress – you’ll warm up quicker than you think!
Protect your extremities
Make sure you cover up your head, hands and toes. Your hands will be the first thing to get cold on a run but it’s actually through your head that you lose the most body heat. Warm socks and robust trainers are a must and make sure you stuff some newspaper into your trainers as soon as you get back home!
Perform a dynamic warm-up
A dynamic warm is essential to reduce muscle stiffness and prepare the body for running. It includes lunges, high knees, heel kicks and hamstring walks as well as short sprints, starting easy and building up speed. If you love running as much as we do, it’s tempting to miss it out, but it will pay off in the long run as you’re far less likely to get injured if you stretch. Allow a minimum of 10 minutes.
