Top 10 Places to Run in Britain

Bored of running the same old route, or taking part in the same races every year? Why not try our 10 most interesting runs to spruce up your spring training and set your motivation on fire! Don’t forget to pack both sunscreen and a windproof jacket!

  1. Wherever you live in the UK, a weekend in Snowdonia, North Wales is achievable. In the national park, a beacon for trail and fell runners, you get absolute beauty for your eyes and spirit, and magnificent trails to test your body.

  2. Hadrian’s Wall is the largest ancient monument in northern Europe (measuring 73 miles long) with hilly trails that will get your lungs burning and inspire all.

  3. The South Downs Way is one of our 15 National Trails, and, running from Winchester to Eastbourne, this is a route you can return to again and again. Be prepared for plenty of ascent and descent.

  4. The Grand Union Canal towpath snakes its way from the heart of London all the way to Birmingham and is a hidden green corridor waiting for you to discover it; there are plenty of races along the GUC to tackle once your appetite has been whetted.

  5. If you’re running through the Dartmoor National Park expect to get battered by the elements and in touch with the wild runner within as you explore the valleys and tors of this magical moor.

  6. If you tackle the Yorkshire Three Peaks you will be covering about 23 miles if you take on Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough, and Whernside in the same run. Reaching a height of 2,500 feet above sea level, this is a run to work up to. Don’t forget your compass and expect to walk the steep parts!

  7. Why not take in the beauty of Edinburgh and the Pentland Hills if you are visiting this historic city, with a simple loop around Arthur’s Seat that will give you a taste of the wilderness of the Highlands right next to the city. A simple 5K loop, taking in Holyrood Park, can be repeated if the first loop isn’t enough.

  8. Square Mile, London: one for inner city runners in need of a stress-busting lunchtime run. Set up your own two mile route starting by the Tate Modern, passing the Globe Theatre as you run east along the Thames, head north over Southwark Bridge, go west back along the Thames and head south over Blackfriars Bridge.

  9. The North Norfolk Coast offers some fantastic runs. Try an out-and-back, with cliff tops one way and beach the other. (See photo) Or discover the beauty of Holkham Bay, mixing wooded trails with beach.

  10. Iffley Road track: the most iconic track in the world where Roger Banister broke the four-minute mile. There are also local meets if you'd like to run with others on this historic track.
